In the majority of dogs with bad breath the origin is periodontal disease.  Our mouths and the mouths of our pets contain numerous micro organisms, many of which are important in maintaining oral health.  Some of these micro organisms metabolize protein found in food debris, dead cells and saliva to form volatile sulphur compounds.  These compounds are the source of the bad breath.  The pH of the saliva and the amount of glucose present will influence the production of these compounds.  Saliva with a low pH (acidic) and a high glucose will suppress bad breath.

The dental benefits of soft vs. hard foods.

Some research has shown that dry foods reduce the accumulation of plaque and that soft foods promote plaque formation.  Recent studies do not support this statement and show that dry foods contribute little to dental cleansing and in fact may accelerate the formation of plaque.  The small food particles from hard kibble get trapped between the gum and tooth and the decay of these particles give life to the bacteria that begin the formation of plaque.  For the canine, eating hard kibble is the equivalent of you eating popcorn.

NRG has had success with the following protocol.  Feeding NRG contributes to the destruction of the adhesive layer that secures plaque to the tooths' surface.  (N-R-G has a neutral pH).  Once this layer has been altered, bones can effectively act as tooth brushes to assist in further removing the layer of plaque, and by continuing to offer NRG as the primary diet the absence of hard food particles breaks the cycle of infection.
